Well, I guess it's a good thing I kicked on the defibrillator today because I have something else to say. Or more like, I'm agitated and I believe in the midst of my agitation a public forum would make a good catch spot for it.
So this evening, in talking to a quasi-friend/acquaintance after the hooray of hello, howyadoin, how's the kids, life, you know, standard pleasantries, our conversation took an unexpected turn for the worse.
It went something like this.........
Friend (Beaming) : "Blah Blah Blah.....la la la.....so are you voting for Hilary Clinton? I think she so's fabulous....blah blah blah.......so are ya? are ya? of course you are, right??"
Me (shifting ever so uncomfortably, religion/ politics = cursed topics) : "Well, it's alittle early to make that call."
Friend (looking stunned) " Why wouldn't you vote for her? Huh? Why? What's the problem?"
Me ( looking for the exit door) " No problems, I'm still gathering information about all the candidates, that's all. Wasn't it cold out today? "
Friend (looking horrified) (and this is where she started to piss me off) " I just don't see how an intelligent woman like you would have anything else to think about. Hilary is our savior!"
Me (done): "Ya, ok, savior. All right, well, it was good seeing you again" and I started to move away to find a safe zone when she throws this out.........
Her: "Why in the world wouldn't you want to vote for a woman for President? You don't think a woman can handle it? (and then she practically hissed) You won't vote for a woman President!"
Pause~
Is that the way of it? Is that the way it's going to be, especially within the feminine community? Because this has happened to me twice now. Twice I say. The first time wasn't as bad.... accusation style, but I basically got the same, "How dare you not commit your vote to the name with a vagina right this second."
Seriously, I'm not ready to say who I'm voting for until I know who's going to be on the ticket, do alittle research, keep watching the debates etc, etc. But evidently the gender war is on, sideline style. Or maybe I've just run into two extremely narrow minded individuals and I'm overtly worried now....panic like.
If someone is willing to accuse me of not wanting to vote for a woman, just because I'm not ready to commit to any one politician today, I have a problem with that. I have a problem with "You won't vote for a woman" coming after a conversation as a last ditch effort to sway me. Talk about an immature moronic reason, and reason alone, to vote for anyone, in any situation....... She might as well have followed that statement up with," I'm not gonna be your friend anymore!"
I know the score, I know this little trap. It runs along the lines of this beautiful question, "Do you believe in God?" and then I say, "You know, I have my own thoughts and I'm not throwing my eggs in the manger" and I get the voodoo, "Ohhh your going to Hell lady." Which I guess is supposed to scare me and all, but the truth is, if you don't ride the God ticket, you don't exactly sign up for a hell, so they are both rather mute points. Which brings me to 'vote for the woman' or get pegged as a traitor to the female race, or prejudiced against a woman President etc, etc, etc........ I'm a female getting this mind set, I can only imagine what it will be like for you men, if you dare mention your doubting Mizz Clintons abilities. You'll have a lynch mob of Kotex throwing fanatics after ya!
It shouldn't be like that. It doesn't need to be like that. Obviously, with the state of things in our country, this next election is going to be madly insane (that's for you Paul) and all I'm trying to say now is, lets leave the entire gender part out of it? K. Is that cool? Is that fair, comfy, agreeable, acceptable?
Where my vote ends up going is unimportant, what I do think is critical today.....is people, specifically us gal pals, don't shoot below the belt and cry 'vagina' if we expect a woman to earn her way (not default gender vote) into the big oval office someday.
Again, I'm just saying.............
Oh, and my final comment to the above mentioned person was and I quote, " Why in the world would you vote for someone just because she is a woman? Think about it, it's the Presidency, I want someone who is qualified, a strong leader, respected, responsible and a hundred other qualities. If Hilary Clinton is that person, then she will earn my vote, if it's a male candidate, then he will earn my vote."
P.S.
Wow, thank you everyone for your comments, additional defribulations to the old Iris pages and words. I believe the blood is up and pumping once again. Even though I'm a bit mortified I've actually done a political entry. Always a first time for everything..........

And you have VERY good reason to take a good hard look in particular:

How, how, HOW can you NOT right this second commit your vote to the name with a vagina? Who cares about the ticket, does it have a vagina? I have a stick vagina, and if I were going to vote at all, I'd STILL vote for OUR SAVIOR VAGINA. Why can't you handle it? HILLARY, CAN!
Rebecca, you literally make me want to pull my damn hair out. That's 'IT'. I'm not going to be your friend anymore!

I have been frequently amazed at that one myself. I think there are going to be a TON of surprised female democrats out there come democratic convention time. I just don't see her as trustworthy enough to pull votes. Not that I can remember the last time I voted for a democrat so my opinion really doesn't count anyway!
That would be like voting for someone just because they are a Mormon or black, or whatever. Since when does someone's sex, or religion or anything like that have anything to do with whether they have the capacity to be a good leader. It's so insane. I think the best person for the job is the one who is best qualified to hold the position, end of sentence. Nothing else should come in to it!

You make some great points and I agree. Glad you are just saying... again!

I think you were completely right in taking the stance you did. Welcome back!
I'm voting for Robocop. It really does seem to make the most sense at this point.
Aside from that, though, it would be nice to have a woman president, but I'd like to see a qualified person first. After all, in 2000, people said it would be nice to have a Christian in the White House, and look how that's turned out.

My response to that question would have been, "they call it a *secret* ballot for a reason, you know. I may vote for Hillary. I may not. Either way, you're never going to know, because I don't discuss politics with zealots." Oops, did I say that out loud? ::bats eyelashes::
My answer to the God question would probably be along the lines of, "oh, yes. I just love that cute winged helmet he wears. And that big hammer is sooo imposing. Oh...were you talking about a different God?" ::bats eyelashes::

Oh, and @Dan: I love your idea. I can just see the official Whitehouse communique to North Korea. "Stand down your missiles, or there is going to be...trouble."

Eeeek! A political conversation? I can find a way/reason to run if someone even -breathes- a political word.... and religion? My ideas on religion are such that I -know- I would upset 75% of the population, so... I don't. Again with the running! <LOL> I am a master at changing/getting out of conversations... or maybe it's just my ADD? I mean, I could have a serious conversation with you on politics/religion, but I........ Oooooooh Shiny! I say as I wander away......
HAHAHAHA, yeah, a political entry....... Well, I, too, wonder how anyone can vote for someone, or vote against someone, strictly upon his or her gender, or religion, or race (ethnic race or political race). I've been told that I side with Satan just because I voted primarily Democratic in the last "big" election. Personally, I believe there is more progress in acknowledging ones gender, religion, race, but focusing on the ISSUES, then staying stuck in the "vote for me, it's time for a (insert adjective) candidate!"
And I even like Clinton and Obama......... I think. So far. Okay, enough politics for 2007, right? :) There's time.
Wow! I know a political...wow!
Now you've gone and done it...you've talked political! Lol. This particular race is a doozey, with everyone and his/her uncle trying out for the "prize". It seem to me to be more of talent show than anything else, with each candidate crowing about his/her accomplishments. I actually would like a woman for President, because it is time to catch up with the rest of the world. Whether Hillary is that person, I am still on the fence on that one. I like Obama but he is soooo inexperienced, too raw needs a few years under belt...just to be able to deal with the sharks in Washington. I think I hate politics because the way they rip each apart, it gets so dam vicious....yeah that's what we need. My own view on religion is that it was originally done to civilize barbaric mankind and, in my humble opinion, it has not worked. Glad you are writing again....love, Sandi
I love this post. Unfortunately I have some friends that will vote for her for just that reason, or for him because he isn't her. Lets just look at who is qualified why don't we, hummmmm.
Julie
Sounds like high school doesn't it? Vote for me on the basis of popularity. Yeah, right.....
Sad to say I've heard the Hilary speech. I've also heard the Obama speech, the one that goes something like this "You believe in diversity, and seeing as your a Native American yourself how could you not want the chance to vote for a black president?" If we back up a little there, you might realize I'm not Black, rather Cherokee, so how in the world is that suppose to be an argument. Second I really, really despise the ethnics of politics these days. It doesn't matter if your a woman, black, or even a wiccan to me at this point. The bigger question is do you love war as much as Bush? What about Social Security? Health Insurance for those less fortunate? I can keep going with this thread.
The idea is, there are far bigger issues on the table. The question of voting in a woman or a black man for the first time in history to me is irrelevant. The sad, sad part is that IS going to be the deciding factor for a bigger majority than I want to think about.
Great post, it brought up a very real dilemna for quite a few people. (Hugs) Indigo
i agree some people are too pushy on who to vote for. Have a good weekend
Deb
Rebecca,
I couldn't agree more. You did and excellent job of explaining how it is for us men. I don't even mention Hilary's name in our house. It would be an open invitation for an all out brawl. Thanks for the bit of common sence and a good chuckle.
David
next time you are being elisted in an army against your will, chant these phrases that were sung by a young Bob Dylan when the same demands were made upon him
Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
who's never weak but always strong
to protect you and defend you
whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain't me, babe
no, no, no it ain't me, babe
it ain't me youre lookin' for, babe. ----- Bob Dylan (1964)
Have a sensational weekend, unemcumbered by any such demands!
Marc :)
I'm right beside you on this one... I have yet to pick a candidate, because I'm not all that thrilled with anything that I've seen or read. If someone went off on me like the woman you've written about here, I'd have a hard time biting my tongue. I'wed beh talgin lige dis fowa weeg...
Chelle
I'm with you...... why would we vote on someone, just because she is female. The most qualified should be voted for, regardless of their gender.
http://boiseladie.blogspot.com/
Well, I suppose we definately move in different circles as I can't remember the last time anyone asked me who I was going to vote for in any election. And to tell the truth I couldn't reply today if they did. I don't see a decent candidate to date in the whole field!! But I agree with you 100% to vote for a woman candidate just because she is a woman is insane! That's like voting for a certain man because he attended the college you went to, or just because he is from your state. Heaven help us! - Barbara
it's gonna get uglier.....
Marti
Politics ... I pretend to glaze over just to steer the conversation back to Britney.
Judith
I'd be irritated, too. Gender really should have nothing to do with it.
Lori
This is exactly what makes me apprehensive about Hillary winning the democratic ticket and same with Obama - are we supposed to vote for Hillary because she's a female or Obama because he's black? What about issues, qualifications, leadership, experience, values???? I'm really proud of you for bringing this up and addressing it so eloquently. It's a topic I always avoid because I just don't want to discuss my political position and views, especially the fact that I am not riding the chick bandwagon. I wonder if the democratic party isn't thinking they'll cross party lines by putting one of these guys (excuse me, Hillary, "one of these people") as front runner. What if they chose the other as the running mate? Are they expecting every female and every African American to vote for them because of their gender and race and not based on anything else? I know there are some people that will strictly vote on these factors and that makes me sad. In good conscious I can say it will not be me. My vote is awarded after its earned.
Here here! Qualities that surpass gender should be the deciding factor of anyone's vote casting. Sometimes it comes down to who you can live with (as no 1 politician has 100% of the qualities we all want). Stick to your guns girl...I'm riding right beside you on this!
Tammy
Amen
Religion and politics are cursed topics for me too. I try and stay far far away from either. One Sunday morning I was sitting in the break room at work. Those political TV shows were on just about every local tv station. So I turned the TV off. Along comes a co-worker who comes into the break room and turns the TV back on. After watching for a few minutes, he starts complaining to me about whatever it was that was wrong about whatever political party that was ticking him off. I get frustrated when he starts talking about corruption in our government, and on that note I get pissed and say, "which is why I had turned the TV off, and why I don't like politics in the first place". Finally he shuts up and leaves me alone.
How about another entry!

I guess that I've been away too long, but I was surprised that I had to sign in to "add a comment." Well, getting back to this political situation, we all have the right to vote for whom we please ~ and that's that. If the question is ever put to me, and I hope that it doesn't ~ I will probably have to give up the friendship rather than commit myself to voting for a male or female candidate ~ out of the fear of losing that friendship. There was the same problem with going to war in Iraq or not; and I must admit that I lost two friends (?) over that. Whatever happened to Freedom of Speech? Fear has reared it's ugly head again, however, and after reading your articles, I know that you can handle yourself and will throw it out of the window! Love, IKOWSKY
Hi I don't know if you pop in to read your comments or not. We've lost two friends this week..MzGoochi and Demandnlilchit just about a day apart. I know you used to read them, wanted you to know....come back soon to write miss you too...love, Sandi
Amen... let's leave vaginas and color out of it, and figure out who would actually be best!!! Ack! Craziness...
be well,
Dawn
