The Beauty of Paper

Charley @ Courage commented:  "This might seem pedantic, but what type of notebook do you use? I have two that I carry with me, and I'm wondering which kind you use and why you use it as opposed to another."

I'll tell you what Charley, I'll answer that question today here in my journal, complete with visuals and rambling blather. I need a distraction~~

I covet fine paper goods like a wine collector adores rare vintages. Notebooks fall under the paper good stipulations. If I'm going to take the time to place my words in something, by paper gods, it's going to be worthy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For me there are two writing categories in which my notebooks fall, but one prevailing condition, rule, doctrine and requirement is no lines~
I am of the NO LINES mentality. No lines, no lines, no damn jail cell lines mantra. Much like Joan Crawford famously screamed "NO wire hangers, in this house, EVER" I feel about as much passion about not allowing lines infiltrate my home. Of course, I feel about the same passion about no blue pens allowed as well, but I'll stay on subject here. The only exception made for paper with lines in this household is the girls required school work. Thats it, all other offending paper with lines is cut off at the front door.
First stage collections of writing: These are the notebooks I pack around like my baby blankets. My 100% preferred notebook is purchased at the Art Store. They are hard bound black, wire spine, and thick white blank paper inside. Ideal for creative doodling, sporadic thoughts and unfinished notions. I believe they are supposed to be sketch books. You can buy them in all sizes and I couldn't live without them. Best of all, no stifling, handcuffing, thought squishing lines :o)                         Observe visual exhibit #1
If I want to write little I can, if I want to write
bigger, I can, if I want to write sideways, I can, there is no limitations in any of my notebooks. I don't do well with confinement, in any form, manner or shape of life..............lines on paper make me crazy!
I will mention one other notebook I utilize, but I don't love it as much as my art notebooks. I have a few Moleskin notebooks that serve a specific purpose, so I won't discount those, but the paper quality is questionable.
Second stage collections of writing: If I like something I've written, or believe it's worthy of a better tribute then muddled in with my doodles and eclectic writing, I will then transfer it into the permanent collection. At this stage of writing, nothing but a leather bound journal with handmade (blank) paper will appease me. Because I live in a little town that thinks rainbows, angel cherubs and bunny rabbits on a cardboard covered journal filled with cheap lined paper is an acceptable writing tool, I have to buy all my leather journals online or when I travel. I love the feel of the leather. I appreciate the touch and feel of the handmade paper and the way it 'take's" the ink from my special pens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I understand that my fascination with paper, pens, lines, leather, blank, quality, etc.....could seem a bit irrelevant, but give me a moment........ I once read this little quote, "The written word is the choicest of all relics." So if I regard my writings as a relic of myself, and I entertain the concept that it will remain long after I am gone, why not take the effort to place it in something nice.

All writing is a ritual. It's up to the individual to define how much enjoyment they will derive from the process. The above mentioned notebooks/journals give me the greatest pleasure during my writing rituals. I have no doubt, that pleasure is different from person to person. If someone like lines and blue pens, then thats all that matters, as long as it feels comfortable. ~~  I swear, I won't hold it against you either, my strange requirements stop with me! *grin*

~~I like to nudge myself to take one step beyond simple, beyond the normal and paint alittle extraordinary into everything I do~~

The Paper Goods (Top shelf, leather bound journals, second shelf~ all stationary *ok, I noticed one leather journal snuck on top of the stationary* ~third shelf, black notebooks and misc.)

Does anyone else put this much effort into their paper goods, writing, rituals?

Someone?

Anyone?

I keep my daily diaries in written form before transcribing them on-line. Am now on book 11, page 1480 after 2½ years. Am continually running out of pens and paper. But it has to be lined paper...

Nope-sorry I don't but love that you do:)

You put me to absolute shame.  Shame I tell ya.  I only wish I was 1/2 that organized, not to mention thought to be that devoted to writing and what I write on.  {shuffling feet in place while sheepishly looking at them}

Scolding myself, and visiting a website for stationary that is worthy of correspondence.

If I don't use lined paper I am ALL OVER the place...  It looks horrid.  Then I can't stand to look at it, much less read it.  Everything else about my life is slanted, anyway.

*raising hand*  YoooHooo…  Hello…

I confess that I’m a connoisseur of writing paraphernalia.  I prefer to write on fine handmade paper.  If this makes me a paper snob, so be it.  If paper loves ink, then I’m his devoted mistress.  There, I said it.  I’m a paper whore.  Gimme handmade paper, gimme sentiments, gimme, gimme, gimme...

My dear friend?  You are far more organized than I could ever hope to be.  And, I'm with you on the lines.  I hate them.  You should see me drive!

Aside from that, is that a rocket in your journal or are you just....  wait.  That doesn't work, does it?

I enjoyed this entry very much!  I do used lined paper -- but I love good paper.  I even dislike reading books or magazines printed on cheap paper that will yellow or is a bad texture.
I am filled with envy --- but I am trying to fight it lol -- at seeing the picture of your notebooks so tidily on those shelves.
When I think of paper, what comes to mind is the excitement of getting a stack of brand-new pads of paper when I was a child.  They were unlined and different colors, made from scraps from a small printing firm where my grandmother worked.  She'd bring them home wrapped in clear cellophane, a stack of perfect pads, waiting for me to write on them.  She'd also include brand-new pencils.  Nothing has matched that excitement (in terms of paper products lol) in adult life --- though the leather journals you mention are VERY nice.
loving you

I do remember the time when I was so into journals and writing, sketching, etc....where has that person gone?????  So funny...last night when I was removing my makeup and ending the night...I actually was thinking of you..so weird...and then you post a comment...I was so excited to see your link....I have been in a bubble and if most journals didn't send an alert...I went back in my bubble when done...and the funny thing is...your journal blows my mind every time I read it...I have yet to read a journal here with the quality of writing....you are such a talent when it comes to words and expressing yourself...thank you for the link so my lazy self filled with pity when so much beauty does exsist in my life could come and be refreshed with your journal!  Hugs,TerryAnn

lol.  I need lines.  Without lines, my writing wanders about the page haphazardly.  It seems to start out small and scriptly but then it meanders into tall and loopy.  By the  2nd paragraph it's descended into printed and choppy, all the while working it's way slantedly down the paper.   Uh yea...  I need lines.  lol ~Sie

I'll share with you my thoughts in greater detail some other time, but I find myself wondering just a bit - why is it that you abhor the order of lines but embrace strict order when organizing your writing?

Rest assured, I too am a paper whore, but I fine myself passionate about a notebook you feel only mediocre about :).

I am rather picky about what I choose to write in and with.  I'm not so freakishly (lol) against lines, but I do despise blue ink! lol  Seriously I love choosing notebooks/journals, and I usually do prefer blank pages of quality paper.

Freedom...Freedom!

:)

I never considered quality as important to paper as it is with stuff like a book or television set.

But the way you have it written here reminds me of how much I hated being confined within the lines of lined paper.

The way you write about it tells me just how serious you are about your writing and how important it is to you.

I never looked at paper that way. Although, I have been told that I can pick out a nice pen.

Okay, i don't really know how to answer this... uhh, after seeing that picture and realizing what it's for, I'll be honest Rebecca, my first thought was "y'know, you might want to consider taking Jesus Christ as your personal Savior"... lol... I guess I'm not a cultured soul. I prefer lined paper because I have such horrible handwriting that without lines, it wanders all over the place. You have remarkable talent. And some cute 'quirks'... and that's what makes all of us great in our own way. Be who you are Rebecca (quirks and all), the world is a much better place with you in it...

I like both lines and no lines. When it comes to writing somthing I perfer lines, for the simple fact that my hand writng isn't the greatest, and without lines my writing would start going downwards. If someone were to look at it, it would look slanted and strange. I like drawing and back in the days I took many drawing classes, in this case I would definatly use no lines. Lines would distrupt everything, and it wouldn't look proper. So you can say depending on the curcumstances, is what I would perfer at the moment. Thank you for visiting my journal, and stop by anytime, I like to hear peoples comments.

I think these writing shelves arer wonderful.  I used to do spiral bound journals, and as soon as I filled one with dialogues to the dead, I would throw it away.  For one thing they were illegible and for another I used the dead to talk about stuff the living abhorred.  So I could not take the chance of these journals falling in the wrong hands.  Once my sisters and I agreed to send back to each other all the personal letters sent to us over the years.  Everyone followed through except one and she treasured mine to her, and would go over them and brood about them and tell me she would never forgive or forget what I  said in them.  In the meantime she had received hers to me that fit with mine to hers, so i could not have proved she inspired some of this if I wanted to, which I didn't.  Now my manuscipts and copies of letters I sent reside in a five drawer high file cabineet and two smaller storage boxes.  And on my computer and some backup discs.  I find this to be an interesting entry. Because I determined to be a writer at 6 years old.  I  have certainly been a wriiting animal, and I think you are the genuine article, too.  A true writing animal.  Gerry

Looking at your photo of your notebooks, talk about having a good sense of order. My house looks like it should have been a poster exhibit for hurricane Katrina. My mom swares I came from another womb. I like to tease her about that. When I was born she had the adoption papers all signed but when she saw me, she changed her mind. Am I off topic or what,lol...so random thou I am,lol....I just found my old diaries from 6th grade. I am considering retyping them and posting some on my blog. I think eccentric and weird is a good description of me then and probably now. Hey, since I am presently without a home, I havent been able to get my saved links from my laptop. I have been using my dads computer so if you have time, could you resent me that link to your other writing blog. I had saved it on my favorites but I cant utilize them as a AOL guest on my dads computer.  Thanks sweetie! ~Raven
