Since I'm left on my own, I am forced to ruminate off the material that's placed in my lap during day to day mundane. The best I can come up with right now, thats been floating around in my mind this evening is MUSIC.
This has been on my mind for two distinct reasons.
For one, there has been an evil Lord of Barry Manilow stalking my pages. Now, usually I'm rather eclectic in my personal music tastes..........for example~
I have music from one end of the music sheets to the other. Pulling up my Media Player here on the laptop I see a broad range of music, from Alanis Morissette at the top <great for those times a female is irritated with the male species type music> to David Lanz <my muse claims this one> onward to Disturbed <angry music> down to Eminem < who knows moods> and even father down we have things like Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, John Mayer, Lifehouse, Colors, Marilyn Manson, Seanachie,Sir Mix Alot, Tori Amos, U2, and the list could go on and on and on <NOTICE there is no Vegas Nights Barry Manilow on there, I'm not a member of his fan club like some people>
The second reason music has been on my mind is because of my 13 year old teenie bopper. It seems, that along with the numerous other changes this morphing human is going through, music has become her most important accessory.
I have always loved music, a connection, an inspiration, a feeling or emotion can be found with simple notes. In my humble opinion, some of the most glorious poets are musicians/songwriters. A single song cantransport me to a place or a time, sometimes a good memory, sometimes a sad memory, and sometimes just a feeling that I cannot assign at all. Usually at my office, I'm packing my IPOD around being anti-social, enjoying my own little world without the distraction of office chatter.
My daughters have always been subjected to my music, always on at the house, always ready for an impromptu dance from any of us. So it comes as no surprise that they are just as needy about their music as I am.
Except, now, I feel like I'm being kicked off my Queen of the home stereo system, Dictator of the car stereo music and first choice music pedestal. Specifically the 13 going on 18 year old. She and I, are coming to a real live throw down about this entire music concept. We come home and she has gotten in the habit of rushing to the stereo and putting in her music. We get in the car and before I have the ignition turned on, she's flipped the radio station or slid in one of her CD's.
Mutiny I tell ya, and I'd place money that she's paid off her little sister to swear allegiance to her music choices over mine from here on out. They, little woman, are ganging up on me and my obviously good music choices. No worries, I can take 'em.....
Tonight I tried something. I was wicked. Driving along to a school dance, Shelby had already beat me to the music and I had a thought.
A twisted little notion of fun actually. I turned the music, completely off. The silence was deafening, I smiled and looked at both wide eyed daughters with the slightly quivering lower lips and said, "So darlins, how was your day?"
In unison, they whipped out a flippant "It was good Mom," And the 13 year old squeaked a horrified, "Mom, you just turned off my favorite song!"
I smiled again, and said, "Oh, I didn't realize that Shelby, but how about we talk for a little bit instead of listening to music tonight" Add another wicked smile~~
It was fun. I also realized playing that little trick elevated me to status of a clueless parent, because I should have realized how devastatingly important listening to that song was at that exact moment.
Essentially, tonight, I became my dad, because he used to do that to me ALL the time when I was a teen. Being a parent can be loads of fun, you just have to pay attention to the little opportunities that present themselves.
That should teach them to dominate the music choices!!!But I did hear that Colin Firth has excellent music choices and appreciates a good stomp......

Yes, I heard the same thing, that Colin Firth appreciates a good stomp...in your wet Colincrete! And isn't he soooo adorable when he does that?
I'm disappointed Bryan Adams wasn't at the top of your music choice.

Hey mom, that's part of the fun of being a kid! Besides, I dig all of their 'currents', too, so we get along perfectly.
... Shake that money-maker, baby, and quit whining 'moldies'! [:P]

What a lovely entry. I so love COLIN FIRTH!
My now 23 year old daughter went through her music stages. I was never "with" her. It seems I was too old, always, regardless of how young I was.
Silence is golden sometimes............especially when it is evil. LOL!
LOL.....See I guess I am lucky that whatever I put in the kids appreciate...The fight is usually between them and their moods. The diva is usually in the classical mood, where CJ is in the Godsmack and the Teen is desparately trying to put in his Cradle of Filth...Otto BTW just sits by and waits to see who wins.
Although there are those gloomy days when the insistance of silence is demanded...I never knew shoulders sagged that low...
Oh and COlin??? Yummy huh? Gee quite ferver about him lately hmmm....He just STOMPED right in this little neighborhood of ours I wonder if he enjoys living next to Barry??
(actually I am more the Viggo fan..talk about meow)
Peace

That cleverly fiendish....mwahahahahaha!
Yeah??? Wait'll she decides that every other song is her favorite song!!! I, too am a fan of Eminem.. he does moods well. I'm eclectic in my tastes too.. have to go now... I'm firthty....Wow!! This went from being comment clashes to outright journal jihad!! How fun!! ;) Penny
chortle.......... :):):) judi
Hahahaha, firth!
Music is awesome. I can't always make out the lyrics, but I can still hear the music. I am very lucky in that my son listens to the same type of music as I do. (Ok well I force him, but after awhile, he stops complaining.) Sometimes he'll even sing along. I love it when he does that.

At least you didn't have your kid "steal" your music. My son discovered swing and early rock...so he appropriated significant CD's..they are now mixed in with Marilyn Manson (evil) and other such stuff (not music)....LOL...Sandi http://journals.aol.com/sdoscher458/LifeIsFullOfSurprises
I'm so glad you got to play in the firthpit. Grrrrr. You guys are so great. I've been having laughs all day today and yesterday.
"Here’s to Las Vegas
It’s one of a kind
Here’s to the smiles all around
Neons are flashing ‘bout music and passion
All over town
Here’s to the winners
Cheers to them all
Everyone’s winning today"
If I could get my iPOD to work, we could do the trade the music game yo. I got stuff you might like, and I know you have stuff I like. We can call a truce?! Whatcha think?
Colin Firth.......yummy...yummy....

if music be the food of love play on! etc
I love music, from the downright awesome like Radiohead, Muse, et al to a good Electro/new romantic/nu wave romp through the eighties to the divine trinity themselves of Manilow, Diamond and Joel, its all good, Yup, Baz is king, truly.
Your writing style flows so well, even with your bitchy muse on strike.

You write so effortlessly. It's pure pleasure, following where your words take me. This one took me down memory lane. Music? Ah yes, always my cup of tea.
Have a TERRIFIC day, my friend.

Music has always been very important in my life...my preteen is driving me crazy though, wanting all these CD's with questionable lyrics that "all" her friends have. I'm trying desperately to remember my youth as a Hard Rock/Punk/New Wave freak, but honestly that didn't happen until junior high!! I want my one more year of KidBop!! ;oO Michelle
TOO FUNNY!! Yes tonight on the way home from work I had the stereo blasting to the Eagles and the song Take it to the Limit. I scream sang it ... lotsa reasons behind that which i won't bore you with. I lost my music for the past 10 years. I'm becoming alive to it again and rightfully because it soothes the nerves, touches the place that needs addressing and gives voice to all my emotions. Turning off your child's favorite song is absolutely EVIL ... EVIL ... EVIL ... you mean, mean mommy. tee hee. Loved your post.
LOL!! I Loove this entry! it is so....((((parent's)))) entry! LOL!
ahhh..I see you've gotten in the mood to include Colin Firth?
ah..the Lord Of Butter is so scarred! (I hope it is "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" brand.....'ya think?? LOL!)
LOL!!
That was fun!
Gem :-D
Not looking forward to that day. The signs of mutiny are abound with my oldest though. He enjoys 'our' music for the most part, but his taste for rap (crap) has me more than concerned at what my ears will be hearing sooner than I would like. Which, by the way, is never.
Oooo, you'll appreciate this, I'm going to Disturbed in December! Yay!!!!
Tammy
Ever heard of Deep Purple? How about Spooky Tooth or Mott the Hoople? Or Humble Pie, even? Gosh, I'm showing my age! LOL! I would get myself an iPOD, but my turntable is easier for me to operate.....
I really like your journal. I think this vivi awards thing is really nice because now i am finding all the good journals (lol)
GOOD LUCK!
Abs:)
Music has a profound effect on my emotions...so much so that it can bring my mood up or down depending on what I am listening to. I also love to send music to people who I want to convey my feelings to, thru song...
music has always been a way to my soul. I still remeber being entranced with those old vinyls, my Mema would play on her huge stereo. I'm rather eclectic in my tastes of music, and have quite a range of music I love to listen too. I need to put what I'm listening too more often.

speaing of colin firth i just read over at Gem's http://journals.aol.com/libragem007/JournallyYours/entries/966 she seemed t have spotted him going to the vivis lol and i have alot of taste in music it variesties
-Kristina
ahhhh and yes the teenage years got to love them well maybe not you goodluck with it
Stupid Muses... <LOL> I just hate when they leave us high and dry. I've had weeks go by without an entry cause I will set down to type one and then just get frustrated and delete it! But, even without Musey your words just seem to flow. Our tastes here are eclectic also. I have a lot of different stuff, but I find myself always returning to my favorites... my Mannheim, my classical... But, you have to have a little of everything so you have something for whatever mood is current!

Trick or treat!
Trick or treat.
Ah, you left me a treat...Colin is definitely eye candy. What a smile.....

What is it that happens to our ears as we get older? Why can't we hear the melodies our children so obviously can? I think I'm experiencing premature pensionerhood - Dissonance just doesn't make me want to shake it all about like I did back in the glory days of the '80s!

I have arrived. I come to be refilled. To be pumped back up to to a human tolerant stage. You do that for me and tho I do expect a bill at some point from you I'll not check the mailbox today. I so love your eclectic mind set of freedom and surging forward. When my condition deteriates I run to your journal to be renewed, to be refueled, to be tazed with your mind. Thanks much.
Be blessed.

LOL Be thankful it is teenage girls! My 16 year old son not only resets every button on the radio, but we never know from one day to the next what speakers, sub, amp, etc. will be in the vehicle when we get in it. :op - Barbara
While I love your post, more importantly - Colin Firth is quite possibly the sexiest man on earth :)
With peace and love,
